5 Easy Tips For Tech Workers To Stay Fit

Staying healthy with a desk job can sometimes feel like an impossible task, but it doesn't have to be. A few key habits turn it from impossible to inevitable.

  1. Workout a few times a week: Gotta start with the obvious. You want to be fit; you have to exercise. But a few workouts a week is all it takes to get and stay fit. I'm partial to lifting weights: It builds muscle, gives you an aesthetic look, and helps your posture. Plus, more muscle means more calories burned. But any exercise you love will do. (Aim for three days a week minimum at a moderate to vigorous intensity).

  2. Get your steps in: Working from home or at the office means you have to get creative with your activity. Whenever you see an opportunity to walk more, take it. Park farther from the store, take the stairs instead of the elevator or walk your dog more often. Walking burns a surprising amount of calories while also being low impact. I like to walk in the evening to ease my mind before bed.

  3. Quit the High-Calorie Drinks: Soda, juice, and lattes loaded with sugar; they're poison. In moderation, fine, but while working, you might find yourself mindlessly downing drink after drink. Replace those drinks with water, sugar-free options, or sparkling water. You'll feel hydrated, have better focus, and drop weight effortlessly. Pro tip: Sparkling water is zero calories, and the carbonation can help you curb hunger cravings.

  4. Keep Snacking in Check: Eating out of boredom is a common pitfall. I avoid snacking altogether and opt for a few large meals (search intermittent fasting). But that doesn't work for everyone. If you're a snacker, swap out high-calorie snacks for fruits, veggies (a little sauce on the side is ok but don't overdo it), or popcorn which is low-calorie... if it's not soaked in butter.

  5. Show yourself Grace: Last, and most important, show yourself grace! This is a marathon, not a sprint. Learning to live a healthy life all year round will yield more benefits than any diet or exercise "challenge" ever will. Don't look for a short-term fix. Embrace the small habits that turn healthy living from a fad, to a part of who you are.

A sedentary job doesn't mean a sedentary life. It just means being more conscious of the small actions we take every day. Implementing just a few of these into your routine will have you on a path to a healthier you in no time.
